Hello All,

I am a new student. I have been reading the very first section of the text and it is written in first person. Who is the person writing?

Would love some guidance.

Jesus is the one talking. The Course was written by Jesus, scribed by Helen Schucman.

Thanks to the both of you for replying to my question.

I am very very confused. So, wikipedia said it was Jesus. Warren, you are saying that it is Jesus...

Here's where I get confused...why is he referring to himself in the third person...here's a little excerpt from chapter one:

The miracle is a sign that the mind has chosen to be led by me in Christ's service. The abundance of Christ is the natural result of choosing to follow him.

LOL! please help me to understand this piece.

Emily, I think that most students of ACIM don't believe that Jesus was a mythical character. But even if you choose to believe he was, it doesn't take away from the message of ACIM -- that radical forgiveness is the path back to realizing our oneness with God.

btw, you have a cool name!

thank you for being open minded in responding to my question. can you describe to me more personally how I can reconcile the fact that jesus shared so many similarities to mythological gods that came way before him? i mean, the stories are so very much the same.

heres the first google link that came up for me just doing a simple search on the topic.

please, i need some guidance on this.

Actually, Emily, I don't care to try to convince you that Jesus was not a mythological firgure. You are free to belive whatever you want to believe. I will say that Jesus may not have said everything and done everything that is attributed to him in the Bible, but "mythological figure" means to me that Jesus was not a historical figure, which I'm sure he was.

Hey Warren,

I am really not asking you to convince me that he was real (unless you can steer me towards some information that he was in fact a historical figure which would be great!). Rather I am asking, as I said above, for some guidance as to how to reconcile that I do not believe that he is a historical figure. If, as you say, he was the one who worked through Helen to write the book and I do not believe that he ever existed, how then do I put this aside and still study the course seriously?

Hi Emily,

Perhaps you could consider that it was helpful for Helen to believe that it was Jesus. For many people he is a symbol of compassion and forgiveness. If he's not that for you then feel free to just use the term Spirit or whatever is helpful for you ♥ The only thing you really need to consider is whether or not the message of the Course speaks to you. If it does, take what works and leave the rest. An open mind will be your greatest tool in taking the lessons of the Course to heart.

Yes! That makes sense Danielle! I feel that it may be a disservice to put any label on the source of the text. I am looking at it as Love. Love is the source.
