The social network for students and teachers of "A Course in Miracles"
I have a dear friend struggling with sexual identity. Just wondering if anyone has read about this in any Course-related materials or if you just have some general insight to offer.
Many Thanks

Permalink Reply by Cindy L. on February 14, 2012 at 2:28am I dont know of anything in the Course that directly addresses sexual identity...however, The Course teaches that we are not our bodies, we are not our thoughts, we are not our actions. We are One with God, We are Love. Sexuality in the space of our spiritual identity is an interesting topic, whether it is heterosexual or homosexual seems to be irrelevant. What matters is whether we are engaging our bodies from a place of love or a place of fear. Are we there to extend love to one another or to satisfy the ego's perceived needs? This can be said of all of our interactons. This takes time, and experimentation and growth for many of us. We usually dont get things "right" the first times around....
Personally, I dont think God cares about our sexuality much at all...I think the Course teaches us that God wants us to experience the total Joy and Love that comes from him, and which can be found in countless ways of interacting with life...including sex...when we are in our "right mind".
Interesting topic Danielle. I am thinking of your friend tonight and sending love and light.
Permalink Reply by Danielle Boonstra on February 14, 2012 at 10:09am Thank-you Cindy :) "What matters is whether we are engaging our bodies from a place of love or a place of fear." I totally resonate with this statement. My friend is familiar with the Course and I've mentioned this to him before. He has a LOT of guilt over his sexual confusion and a lot of resistance in bringing it to the Holy Spirit. My prayer is that he can bring even his resistance to the Holy Spirit and begin to, like you said, experience all aspects of his life with his "right" mind.
Thanks again. This was helpful ♥

Both of you are involved with unconscious distortions (above the miracle level), which are producing a dense cover over miracle-impulses which makes it hard for them to reach consciousness. Sex and miracles are both WAYS OF RELATING. The nature of any interpersonal relationship is limited or defined by what you want it TO DO which is WHY you want it in the first place. Relating is a way of achieving an outcome.
Indiscriminate sexual impulses resemble indiscriminate miracle impulses in that both result in body image misperceptions. The first is an expression of an indiscriminate attempt to reach communion through the body. This involves not only the improper self identification, but also disrespect for the individuality of others. Self-control is NOT the whole answer to this problem, though I am by no means discouraging its use. It must be understood, however, that the underlying mechanism must be uprooted (a word you both should understand well enough by now not to regard it as frightening).
ALL shallow roots have to be uprooted, because they are not deep enough to sustain you.
Intellect may be a "displacement upward", but sex can be a "displacement outward." How can man "come close" to others through the parts of him which are really invisible? The word "invisible" means "cannot be seen or perceived." What cannot be perceived is hardly the right means for improving perception.
The confusion of miracle impulse with sexual impulse is a major source of perceptual distortion, because it INDUCES rather than straightening out the basic level-confusion which underlies all those who seek happiness with the instruments of the world.

Permalink Reply by Danielle Boonstra on February 14, 2012 at 10:14am This is fascinating! Thank-you so much for taking the time to share this. I will definitely give this to my friend.
"Sex and miracles are both WAYS OF RELATING." This is SO TRUE! I never really thought of it this way. As a heterosexual, I never question my sexual impulses. It's funny, I thought I asked this question for a friend, but this has been so helpful for me!
Thanks Craig :)

Permalink Reply by Michael Ten on February 17, 2012 at 4:29am I think The Holy Spirit supports polygyny, like on Sister Wives.
Permalink Reply by Julia Olsen/ the Mixie Pixie on March 2, 2012 at 8:23pm That's an interesting statement, Michael, and I have no opinion about its truth, so when I ask "Why do you say this, or is there something in the text you base it on?" I mean it in a respectful and curious way, not a challenging way.
Permalink Reply by Michael Ten on March 8, 2012 at 4:37am It is perhaps a personal revelation from which the teachings of ACIM direct me to try and tune into and be aware of.
Permalink Reply by Lorri Coburn on March 7, 2012 at 8:57pm Hi, Danielle, In the Urtext, the first few chapters, there are a number of references to homosexuality. Bill Thetford was gay. You can view the urtext online and search for the terms regarding sexuality.
Good luck, Lorri--oops, just saw Craig's note above. Searching may come up with even more references.

Permalink Reply by Joe Wolfe on March 8, 2012 at 8:54am When the world we see through the eyes of the body is belived to be 'reality' then so are all of its properties asumed 'real.' The ego thrives on these seemingly harmless features that we hold so dear. The concept of Sexuality is no more or no less a character in the dream than any other deeply rooted belief. It's one of the hardest to relinquish and most difficult to let go of.
The Course reminds us constantly that "I am not a body, but free and still as God created me." So if I (The Essence of Who I Really Am) am not a body then I must be something 'else' out of my immediate awareness. This something 'else' is pure Spirit created in His likeness, devoid of all special inclinations.
We tend to cling to certain aspects of this world we think we see through five very limited senses. Yet these islands of bliss never really completely satisfy...we always want 'more.' That sort of 'wanting' keeps us here, riding the fence...one leg in the world and one on the lawns of Heaven.
Love, Light and the Peace of God.
